1966 Syndrome
Following, what seemed like a hundred years of BBC and other English media, reminding us that England won the World Cup in 1966. I carried out some research to investigate this phenomenon. The conclusions are below in a letter printed by the Daily Record.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1966 Syndrome
Most people are now familiar with the inherited neuropsychiatric disorder known as Tourette’s Syndrome. A sufferer often utters obscenities or socially inappropriate remarks for no apparent reason. A rare form of this condition, known as the Sixty Six Syndrome, affects a small group of people who have some common traits: they are all English and they all work as football commentators.
Symptoms of this disorder include the uncontrollable compulsion to mention the 1966 World Cup or anything associated with it for no apparent or logical reason. So even when commentating on a match between two teams that has nothing whatever to do with the 1966 Final they are possessed by an irresistible impulse to mention that England won the World Cup that year.
Neurologists are convinced that the condition is inherited as most of the present day sufferers were snotty-nosed kids 52 years ago and have clearly grown into snotty-nosed adults with the same patronising and condescending attitude as their BBC forebears. A leading expert on the condition has opined that the only possible cure is for sufferers come to terms with the fact that England have not won anything for over 50 years..
